All wild animals seek shelter in locations that are warm and dry. The Washington DC squirrel is no exception. Squirrels usually live in hollow trees and the chimney may appear such. Squirrels are able to climb in and out with ease. It also protects the squirrel from other elements and predators. Squirrels may enter the chimney by choice or sometimes fall in. Chimneys made of bricks or stones are easy for squirrels to climb in and out. However, if it is metal tube flu then the squirrel may get stuck and unable to climb out.

Removal of squirrels from the chimney
There are 2 methods of removal. It also depends on whether the squirrel is trapped or entered the chimney voluntarily. This can be ascertained by an inspection of the chimney.
Method 1
If the Washington DC squirrel is able to come out then a ¾” or more sisal rope is lowered into the chimney. The other end can be tied to a weight or around the chimney. The rope must be long enough to reach the damper or smoke shelf. Wait for the squirrel to climb out by itself and cap the chimney. It is important to note that the squirrel may not immediately climb out. Then leave the rope and wait for the squirrel to come out when it feels safe.
This method can also be used if the squirrel has fallen between the inner and outer flu.
Method 2
When the squirrel is trapped or unable to climb out the option is to open the damper door. A baited trap can be set in the fireplace. The Washington DC squirrel enters the trap on opening the damper door. This method works well only if the fireplace is secure by glass or plywood doors. Sometimes, making a noise also encourages the squirrel to climb into the chimney and out. The damper door is then closed.
When the fireplace is not secure then some steps have to be taken before opening the damper door. All doors leading to the interior of the house must be closed. An exterior door/window is kept open for the squirrel to go out. This must be in line of sight near the fireplace. A humane bait trap must also be placed near the fireplace. The squirrel may either streak out through the open door/window or retreats near the fireplace. The squirrel may then enter the trap. The trap is taken out and the squirrel released. The chimney is then capped.
Some important Do’s and Don’ts
•	Do install chimney caps and perform regular inspections.
•	Do call wildlife experts if you cannot handle the situation.
•	Do not try to catch a squirrel with bare hands or gloves. Squirrels have sharp teeth and can bite through.
•	Do not try to smoke out the squirrel. Injured and baby squirrels cannot get out and may die.
•	Do not attempt to climb the roof if it is difficult or you are not confident. The Washington DC squirrel may jump out startling you.
